balancing your immune system

Easy tips to help strengthen and balance your immune health.

Hello from Florida! ❤️Sending some sunshine to brighten your day wherever you may be.

In life you may not be able to control many things…but you can focus on keeping your mind, body, spirit, and immune system strong. 💪🏼 Oh, and it does take a few years but you can also grow your own pineapples! Sometimes they are super tiny lol… but a home grown pineapple big or small are seriously the sweetest!!!

Achieving a “healthy balance” that makes your true beauty shine begins with the work you do inside. It’s a combination of the mind, body, and spirit. Nutrition and how you “self care” plays and enormous role in your body’s overall health. We all know a strong immune system is needed to stay well… but how often do you consciously feed your body what it needs to achieve optimal health? All this “self care” is work, lol! But you want to look and feel your best. Am I right?!

Before we dive in I want to say that no one is perfect and it’s ok to have “off” days. I’m a firm believer that you should always listen to your body. Meaning if you need to lounge and listen to music, binge on netflix, or lay down and nap mid day do it! For some of you it’s being productive, going for that long run /walk/ bikeride, getting up early, and checking off all the things on your list for the day. Someday’s it’s skipping your workout all together, having desert, or a glass of wine that you truly need. Do whatever you need to cultivate peace and an overall sense of “wellness”. Give yourself permission to embrace whatever end of the spectrum you are feeling. Just everything is moderation is the key!

Aside from my work in the creative field I’ve had an interest in health & wellness. My personal health journey started around 20 years ago… so it’s been years of learning, trying, and testing what works for me. Our health journey is a path unique to each individual as we are all different.

Sharing some healthy staples in our kitchen and things I’ve learned along the way. I’m sure you know some of this and hope it can serve as a reminder to be mindful and do your best… whatever that looks like for you each and every day! Ok, let’s dive in.

Water- 💦 stay hydrated! Water carries oxygen through the body. Essential for survival and optimal health. Add lemon or lime for extra vitamin C!  Try to start your day with water before coffee, tea, or anything else.

  • I try to start my day with an Immunity tonic - warm water, fresh lemon, and cayenne. 🍋Make sure the water’s not to hot before adding the lemon or it will kill the enzymes. Lemons have tons of live enzymes and vitamin C making them a powerful immune booster. I use a whole small lemon or 1/2 a large one. Add a shake or two of cayenne pepper for it’s nutrients, vitamins, and to help dry up mucus in the body. Just doing these 3 things make a powerful tonic for your immune system. Play around with those 3 as a base and try adding some of the suggestions below to change it up! Make it so it tastes good to you. If you don’t care for spice just try a little, eventually your tolerance will grow.

  • If desired a little sweet I love this manuka honey for it’s powerfully nutritious antioxidant, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory benefits! Is so good to have around to add to many other recipes.

  • Ginger root - (if you can find it right now) is loaded with nutrients and has a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect. I love getting ginger in when I can! Just put it in first too steep before the lemon, while the waters warmer. Water can be boiling for the ginger but let it cool down before adding the lemon.

  • This is my favorite apple cider vinegar- known for its antioxidant and antimicrobial effects. Can also be used in salad dressings etc.

  • If you don’t care for warm water or lemon no problem… just try to have a glass of water when you wake up!

Sleep- 😴 the body repairs itself when you sleep. Around 6- 8 hours give or take is optimal. Do what’s best for your body as much as possible. We all have times when getting whats needed isn’t possible…but being aware is key so you can try and do better.

  • Try and sleep when the moon is up. Getting in any extra 💤 before midnight is really good for you. This is something I personally struggle with as I’m a night owl.... but if you can get in a hour or two before 12 it’s gives extra repair time for your brain and liver.

Mindset- Focus on staying positive, do whatever you need to stay calm and grateful . You have the power to decide everyday if your intention will be one from faith, gratitude and love or from worry, fear, and hate. Limit the news and anything that doesn’t lift you up. Stay informed but notice how things make you feel.

  • Take time to listen to yourself, sit in nature or in silence at home, listen to your soul breathe…what makes your heart happy?

  • I like starting my day giving thanks for what I’m grateful for. You and do this exercise anytime- sit in a cross legged seated position… place your hands in prayer by your heart or relaxed facing up on your lap. Give thanks for every breathe you take, for your health, family, friends, home, food and so on…. You will see there is so much to be thankful for and your list will grow!

  • Having a gratitude journal or writing down what you are grateful for is another powerful exercise.

  • Prayer- there is power in prayer. Please pray for our nation, leaders, those who are sick, have suffered, lost loved ones. Give thanks for protection and health of family and friends. I enjoy doing a daily devotional using an app called she reads truth and love that sweet time with God.

  • Meditation- spending time in prayer and meditation is so good for overall peace, clarity, and mental health. Set a timer on your phone- clear your mind, let the thoughts come and go, sit in silence …start with a few mins working your way up to 15- 20 a day. There are lots of good guided meditations on youtube as well.

  • Keep check on your mental health and carve out time for self care!!!

Cleanliness- make sure to keep your hands clean by washing them often for at least 20 seconds especially after being out in public, sneezing, coughing, and blowing your nose. Keep surfaces clean & sanitized. Avoid touching your face, eyes, & mouth.

Exercise and go outside- I enjoy switching up my fitness routine with online yoga classes, workout video’s, and live streams floating around. I’ve worked out at home using Beachbody for quite some time it’s worked great with my normally busy schedule. You can workout in your living room, bedroom, dining room, outside, it doesn’t matter just move your body in some way!

  • Simply stretching is an effective favorite of mine especially on days I don’t feel like doing much.

  • There’s always walking, biking, rollerblading, yoga, or running outside. Strengthening your body is always a positive way to care for yourself. Since the weather has been so nice in Florida I’ve been riding my bike while Paul runs.😉

  • Just getting outside is shown to reduce stress and elevate your mood. Go touch the earth, have a picnic, lay or put your feet in the grass. It’s grounding! If you can’t get outside now just remember to do it when the opportunity arrises.:)

#gooutside #picnic #pineapples #balance #sunshine

Nutrition - be sure to eat a balanced diet full of: fruits & vegetables, limiting sugars, dairy, heavy meats, processed items, & alcohol. We are what we eat so trying to eat a well rounded diet is so important. Meaning switch things up so you get benefits from different food groups daily… everything in moderation is the key! Too much of anything isn’t ideal.

*If you cant buy organic don’t worry just try to eat as fresh as possible. If packaged items are all you have access to that’s totally ok til you can do better.

  • Ideas for fresh and frozen items you can have on hand to cook or add to smoothies include- berries, vegetables, bananas ( peel if freezing) greens such as chard, kale & spinach. You can “blanch” greens and other veggies by dipping into hot water for 10-15 seconds take out and put in an ice bath… spread out and allow to dry on a flat surface before freezing.

  • These types of items won’t go bad in your pantry- beans, rice, veggie pastas, and soups. When you cook plan to double up on recipes so there’s extra to freeze or have multiple meals.

Make sure you’re getting plenty of these in your diet. 👇🏼

Vitamin C- 🍊a powerful antioxidant that helps keep the immune system strong.

  • The best way to naturally boost C is by eating plenty of grapefruits, oranges, lemons, limes, pineapple, and spinach.

  • If you feel the need to supplement I love this powder from earthley for c...and it doesn’t have added sugar like emergen-C. You could also buy a vitamin supplement. Just be sure it doesn’t have a bunch of fillers.

Vitamin D- is essential for supporting the immune system, brain lung function, nervous system, cardiovascular health, healthy bones, teeth, and more.

  • Being out in the sun ☀️ helps your body make D. Another great reason to get outside for a bit if you can! If you can’t get out just sit by a window and let the sun shine on your face for 20 minutes or so.

  • cod liver oil- is a natural source of vitamin A and Vitamin D. If you can’t handle the taste you can supplement. I like this one from earthley it’s pretty mild in taste for fish oil.

Zinc- helps the immune system fight off viruses and bacteria.

  • Foods like nuts, seeds, beans, & dark chocolate contain zinc.

Probiotics-  a healthy microbiome in your gut can significantly influence immune response.

  • Fermented foods, kombucha, yogurt, and supplements contain probiotics. Supplementing is great because most of us don’t eat enough of those foods on a daily basis.

  • If you supplement look for one in the refrigerator section with strands in the billions. Best taken on an empty stomach first thing in the am with water or your warm lemon water.:)

Vitamin A- is a nutrient that is only obtained in our diets and is essential for overall well-being, health, and immune function.

  • Some foods that contain vitamin A are broccoli, spinach, sweet potatoes, carrots, black eyed peas, and cod liver oil.

Elderberry- 🍇 a powerful berry that can have a number of benefits including helping strengthen the immune system.

  • My fav is this one or finding someone in your area who makes it locally. If you’re in Florida you can buy a locally made one here. I like to use elderberry as an immune booster, preventative during times like this, or at the very first sign of a cold or flu symptom.

I hope this will inspire you to try something new and up level your routine a bit. There’s no better time than the present to implement a new healthy habit or two. Comment below a “healthy habit” you have.? Feel free to share this post with a friend it may benefit!

White Hot.

There is something about wearing white during the hot summer months; and you definitely can't go wrong with a cute white dress!  This off the shoulder number is simple yet classy and can be worn anywhere from a lunch date,  to a tropical vacation, or for a totally different look paired with sexy heels for a nice dinner. The fabric is delicate and I love the flare sleeves.  A versatile piece like this one is timeless and super chic. Because I'm ready for a vacation; I choose to style it with a straw hat and nude wedges for a beachy resort vibe!

Try adding a scarf or belt for a fun pop of color! Hats are my signature for fun flare.:)

On self love.

image.jpg

Self love is the magic key to finding happiness. When we love and take care of ourselves it unlocks our hearts and allows our inner lights to shine. With self love comes confidence, which results in us "feeling good" and when we feel good we look great.  All of the other area's of our life fall into place when we are mindful of what we need to be happy. After all how can we love anyone else without first loving ourselves?  Ultimately, we all want to have dream careers, healthy relationships, and lives! I have learned that #selflove is the root in which it all begins. Sharing a few reminders as its easy to loose site of whats important with our busy schedules.

Confidence- Its easy to compare ourselves to others, how they look, what they have etc... When we wear confidence as our outfit we can literally put on anything and rock it!!! Having security in the unique way God made you gives us the strength to literally conquer the world. No matter what our shape or size may be. We are all beautiful with special gifts and talents!!!

image.jpg

Spend time alone- Love being in your own company! The more time you spend with yourself the more you will learn about what you don't like.

image.jpg

Personal growth- Is imperative... we are meant to be challenged, continue growing, and learning to be better versions of ourselves no matter how old we are. When we aren't pursuing things that inspire us we become bored and stagnate. Use past experiences both good and bad to learn from.  Change what you don't like and use it as fuel to create the life you dream of.:) Get excited about your future anything is possible!

 Dream. Believe. Achieve.

image.jpg

Set boundaries- We all have different guidelines on how we want to be treated. Having a good understanding of your own boundaries will help protect and keep you happy in difficult situations.

Balance- when we give to much of ourselves to a career, relationship, etc, it's easy to loose sight of whats important to us. Having a healthy balance helps us to stay focused on what makes us happy!  Also, surrounding yourself with people who are positive, inspiring, and uplifting will help you be the best you can be!

Gotta take care of yourself first! If we are empty we have nothing left to give to anyone else. Hope some of these ideas are helpful. Please subscribe, comment below on how you care for yourself, and other topics you guys would like to read about.:)

For Love and Lemons

Beauty and Blossoms.

image.jpg

Inspired by some of this summer's beauty trends: top knots, short dresses, wedges, and these beautiful flowers. When my best friend and creative soul sister ( Harana Zhang) and I decided to shoot...I knew exactly how I would do our makeup and hair!

On a daily basis I tend to wear a lot of neutrals. However; this aqua eyeshadow happens to be one of my absolute favorite choices for a pop of color! I used a claypot in the shade (unicorn kisses) by tarte as a base on the lids of our eyes with aqua eyeshadow by mac on top to make the color stand out! The liner is by inglot and lashes are lily lashes. On the lips is a fuchsia pink pencil anime blended with a soft baby pink lip tar called femme from occ.

A top knot is a easy way to give your hair a nice summer look!

image.jpg

Um! Can we talk about how beautiful these bouganvillias are?! We planted these tiny plants three years ago when we moved into our home; and they have blossomed into the most gorgeous specimens. They do have thorns and require quite a bit of maintenance because they grow quickly. However; they add a terrific curb appeal; and not to mention they make me very happy!

This home was built in the 70's and we have been renovating since moving in.  Paint, pavers, pergola, and the landscape have been the focus thus far for the outside. It's a lot of work but very rewarding to see the transformation. I'll do another post about our home later.:)

image.jpg

Short dresses, off the shoulder everything, all white, big prints, and platform wedges have been a hit this summer. You really can't go wrong with any of them in my opinion!

Step out and try one of these beauty trends this season. Or plant some flowers to make you smile!!!

Fun in Florals.

It's almost the end of spring here in Florida and the weather has been perfect for hanging outside. My bestie was over for tea and it was beautiful out; so we of course had to shoot a look to enjoy the weather.

Fun florals and prints are very popular right now! I recently styled an entire editorial for a magazine in all florals. In love with the navy, white, and tonal yellow combo on this dress; and that it has a 70's vibe. Even though I'm petite I love long jackets, skirts, dresses and anything mustard! Pairing a fun dress like this with a cool long duster jacket and some funky gladiator sandals is the perfect option for chilly spring mornings and evenings. Look for a floral piece to add to your wardrobe this season!

Basics.

As a stylist it's important to me that I dress people in clothes they feel absolutely amazing in! There are a few basic items I feel everyone should have in their closet. Ultimately, the goal is to have these items that make you look great and feel confident as your "go too" items to wear. When we look good we feel good period.

I'm very petite so finding some of these basic items is actually difficult for me... but trust me I do ok!

image.jpg

A pair of jeans that hug your body in all the right places is definitely an essential; and preferably in a style that is current. Although I do recommend keeping all jeans and any items that you love wearing in any style because all fashion cycles back around!

image.jpg

A basic white t-shirt  is another great item because it can be worn with many things, and dressed up or down for any occasion.

Having a chic jacket you can layer with any outfit wether it be leather, denim, fur, or just something that "fits to a tee" is definitely a must have!

image.jpg

I'm also a fan of having good pair of sunglasses; and a few minimal accessories that you can throw on for some flare wether it be a scarf, watch, earrings, rings, or hat. These things really show off our individual personalities!

For women a "little black dress", business outfit, a good purse, and pair of heels, are also must haves. For men a nice fitting suit, dress shirt, tie, and nice pair of dress shoes are all good basics. You never know when you may need to pull them out even if its not part of your daily attire. I always keep a jacket and a cute pair of heels in my car, along with my yoga clothes:)

That 70's Vibe.

I've always loved 70's fashion, and my personal style is heavily influenced by this era. That 70's Vibe has been everywhere this season. The color mustard and flare legged pants have always been favorites of mine... so seeing this fashion in so many stores, and getting to wear so much of it has been exciting. This is what I was wearing when my good friend Nate stopped by for a meeting and took some shots.

If you don't have any 70's inspired items in your closet its a good time to add a piece or two to your wardrobe. I recommend a pair jeans that flare at the bottom, a rust or mustard colored top, or maybe a cool pair of platform shoes!

Urban Chic.

Greetings from a chilly evening exploring the downtown area on a recent trip to LA. I was there to do styling and makeup for a few photo shoots and decided to capture my outfit each night before dinner!

Dusty pink has been a favorite color of mine this season... so I have purchased a few items in it! This shaggy jacket has been my go to this winter its super warm, soft, and is in the perfect hue.

I'm really into lacy pieces and especially anything that has a babydoll fit. My favorite thing about dresses like this is that they can be dressed up or dressed down depending solely on your shoe choice.  It is a perfect day to night piece; and can be paired with sandals during the day or your favorite boots/ heels for night! Try adding a pair of high or low socks depending on your shoe choice for some fun flair!

Tips and Tricks

Hi loves!!! Ever wonder what makeup and hair products you should try, or how to use them? Below is a pic of me completely fresh faced (except a little brow) and before my hair is done. Wanted to share the products I used to create a natural yet defined beauty makeup and hair look on myself for a recent shoot. Feel free to ask questions. Also, would love to know what other topics you all want to learn or hear more about?

Brows: Eyebrows frame the entire face...so filling them in with a pencil, eyeshadow, or brow product can make a big difference! Its especially important when taking pictures or being on film. I also, recommend doing it daily. If you happen to apply the product to heavy or thick simply run a clean mascara wand or brow comb through them. If the hair is colored then the brows should match the hair. I used the anastasia beverly hills brow wiz in dark brown.

Eyes: It's best to pick either accentuating the eyes or the lips for most occasions. Accentuating both features is a dramatic look; and there are definitely certain times for that.  In general for daily wear its best to pick one or the other. I love to make the eyes pop, even if it's with neutral colors! 😍  Starting with an eyeshadow base makes the shadow stand out and keeps it from creasing throughout the day. Really liking the primer potion by Urban Decay Cosmetics. I love that it's the color of skin (if you are lighter), and it makes the shadow last all day. Next, I softly swept foxy eyeshadow on my lid (from the naked 2 pallet). Then blended Mac shadows malt into the inner crease of my eye (to create definition); and embark on the outer crease (this helps open up the eyes). Also, softly blended the embark eyeshadow around the eyes, to create a liner effect without the use of liner. Mascara is my favorite beauty product! Don't be afraid to apply 2 coats to make the eyes look open and awake! For this shoot I used "Thick Thelma" mascara by hot makeup usa. If you get marks on your skin a dry q-tip is your best friend. :)

Skin: I have super sensitive skin and have tried about every brand on the market at all price points. After literally years of trial and error found a brand called gloMinerals ... I absolutley love their foundation products, they do not irritate my skin, and I can use them on a daily basis!!! If you like a heavier coverage then try the satin foundation or matte if you are super oily. The tint in the color honey light is my favorite...it's super light, sheer, and dewy. For this shoot I opted to have a little more coverage and blended a little bit of Mac face and body in the color C4 into it. Used makeup forever HD powder to set the foundation...Nars bronzer to contour, and gerard cosmetics star powder to lightly highlight the high points of the face.

Lips: Boldly Bare Lip pencil by Mac is one of my daily go to's. :) It's the perfect neutral that can be worn with pink, peach, or beige lip products. Instead of drawing a line with the pencil try turning it on the side and lightly shape the lip with it, so you define the lip without drawing a harsh line. Occ lip tar in hush to fill in the lips softly rubbing them together to blend, and gerard cosmetics lipgloss in nude applied to the center of the pout giving a naturally larger effect.

Hair: My hair is naturally curly, but needs a lot of product!!! Used all obliphica products... Had the pleasure working with them as a makeup artist for a few hair shows over the past few years; it's a great company and I absolutely love the entire line. Washed with the shampoo and conditioner...as my hair was drying I mixed the curl cream, molding cream together and ran the products through starting at the ends of the hair and working my way up. When my hair was dry I applied the seaberry extract serum; also concentrating at the ends and running evenly throughout  the hair. Avoid putting serums right on the top of your head, so you don't end up with that greasy look!

Street Chic Style

Life can be busy and we sometimes need a few key pieces that can take our normal everyday look to street chic!

This is how I typically look running around, and working on set. I love high low tops, and anything lacy! Paired this one from Urban Outfitters, with my vintage reserve Joes jean shorts, a basic tank, and a hat from Forever 21!

Being Beautiful

"For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness: and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone".

- Audrey Hepburn

The essence of true beauty comes from inside and choosing to see the beauty all around us. As much as I love dressing up and enhancing with makeup, finding Gods light inside you and allowing it shine is being beautiful to me.Photo by @haranazhang
